From Mitla, the road winds and climbs through the sierra towards the village of San Lorenzo Albarradas, and then continues towards the small village of La Roaguia, where the natural site itself is located. It is easily recognisable by its two large petrified waterfalls of almost immaculate white water that plunge into a void with omnipresent vegetation. It is one of the most popular attractions around Oaxaca. And for good reason: here, the water rises from the rock and it is possible to bathe in the turquoise-colored pools, in front of a magnificent panorama. It is possible to take a short walk to observe the waterfalls from the bottom; you will notice that the place is dug with small channels that date back to prehispanic times. The entrance of the site is as it should be invaded of stands of victuals, and one can as well camp there as sleep in summary huts. The place is of course more magical in the early morning, when the visitors of the various tours coming from Oaxaca have not yet taken possession of the place Since 2020, the site of Hierve el Agua is unfortunately no longer accessible to tourists. This is due to a long-standing conflict between the state government and the villages surrounding the site, as well as between certain local communities. The inhabitants particularly deplore the fact that the income generated by the natural site (nearly 2 million pesos per month before 2020) does not benefit the local populations.
