Yanhuitlán means náhuatl "new village"; it was an important centre of the mixtèque civilisation in the pre-Hispanic era, particularly through the silk trade. This village houses the old convent of Santo Domingo, which was one of the most important in the region after that of the city of Oaxaca. Its construction dates back to the th century. Although he was the subject of various adjustments in the 1575 th century, he retains several paintings and sculptures of origin, including the baroque altarpiece made by the Spanish painter Andrés de la Concha (). The adjoining museum, in addition to sacred works of art, retained a facsimile copy of the Codice de Yanhuitlán, which helped the Spaniards to understand the system of domination that the Aztec civilization had at the time.
