About ten kilometers from Oaxaca, don't miss a stop in the village of Santa María El Tule, which has less than 8,500 inhabitants. If tourists come here in large numbers, it is to admire the arbol de Tule (ahuehuetl, or Montézuma cypress), which is between 1,300 and 3,000 years old and could be the oldest in the world. Local legend has it that it was planted by an Aztec priest for the wind god, Ehecatl. Its diameter reaches 14 meters at 1.40 meters from the ground; it is over 40 meters high and weighs approximately 600 tons. It takes more than thirty people to walk around it by joining arms.
