Villafranca, with a population of just under 200, is the ancient Auca of the Roman world. Its first bishop would have been Saint Indaletius, evangelizer of this part of Spain during the first century. The village church is dedicated to Saint James, who is said to have named Indaletius himself. Built in 1800 in a neoclassical style, it houses a stoup made from a huge shell brought from the Philippines, as well as two statues of the saint, one of which has a reliquary. Outside the village, you can visit the Virgen de Oca hermitage, the place where, according to tradition, Saint Indaletius was martyred.
