Santo Domingo de la Calzada is an important stage on the Way of St. James. This small town of 6,000 inhabitants grew up around an old pilgrims' hospital transformed into a parador and has a vast cathedral of Romano-Gothic transition. Framed by its ancient medieval walls, the old town is structured around the Plaza de España, where the town hall stands; the Plaza del Santo, where the parador and the cathedral are located; and the Calle Mayor, lined with beautiful residences with coats of arms. In August there is a theatrical performance of the Miracles of the Saint, and in December there is a medieval market.
