Atapuerca is located 17 kilometers east of Burgos, a village with a population of about 160 inhabitants, where in 1054 a famous battle took place between Ferdinand I of León and his brother García IV of Navarre, the latter being killed in the fight. Atapuerca, which preserves a 15th and 16th century church dedicated to Saint Martin, is best known for its prehistoric site, which is a real treasure listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. Indeed, several vestiges of the first human beings in Europe, dating back nearly a million years, have been discovered there as well as a plethora of cave paintings. You will find several bars, restaurants and bakeries on site.
