Wedged between the Cantabrian mountain range and the Basque mountains, Las Encartaciones (Enkarterri in Basque) was originally a kingdom with its forts and customs. Composed of nine valleys and ten municipalities, it stretches for about 550 km. There are many prehistoric remains here, including the cave of Arenaza, which houses cave paintings, and the cave of Ventalaperra, with its remains of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man. Already in 25 B.C. the Romans knew the strategic value of this area, as evidenced by the causeway linking Burgos to Balmaseda. Today, the area owes its development to the furniture industry
