To get to Bélou islet, better known as Îlet-à-Malheur (800 m), half an hour's walk from Aurère, you have to cross a small bridge over the Bémale ravine. The islet bears this sinister name in memory of the forty runaway slaves who were exterminated in 1829 by a detachment commanded by Guichard. Today, this charming village, which still symbolizes the tragedy of the marronnage, offers its visitors the peaceful happiness of its quietness, fleeced with silky grass. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly around its small shingled chapel, built in the 1930s and 1940s, and its bell tower, school and gîtes.
