Roche-Plate (1,100 m) is a small islet located on the other side of the Galets River from La Nouvelle and in the shadow of the Maïdo rampart, from where one can descend to reach it. A cement school was built there in 1953 for about forty children: all the materials were brought in on human backs. Today, there are several other schools in Mafate: Îlet-à-Bourse (about ten pupils), Îlet-à-Malheur, Grand-Place (30 pupils each, divided into two classes), Îlet-aux-Orangers... Unfortunately, the islet of Roche-Plate is depopulating and its school has far fewer pupils: 70 families at the beginning of the 20th century, about fifteen today.
