At an altitude of 1,400 m, this is the main islet of the Mafate cirque, or at least the one most frequently visited by hikers. It lies in the middle of the southern part of the cirque, not far from Col du Bélier and Marla. The village has a few grocery stores, several gîtes, lunch tables, an orientation table and a lawn that's always ready to welcome you. La Nouvelle is becoming increasingly popular: tourism has become the village's main source of income. If you're looking for more authenticity and a change of scenery, you'll have to head north or east of the cirque. La Nouvelle now has a population of around 150.
