Marla (1 645 m), the highest islet of Mafate, the most southern of the cirque and also the most beautiful for some, because it is more authentic than La Nouvelle, while being rather accessible for hikers. It is home to only about ten families, who live mainly from cattle breeding, lentil growing and tourism. Ideally located, at the crossroads of several hikes, Marla is accessible in 3 hours from Cilaos via the difficult Col du Taïbit or in 3h30 from Salazie via the most accessible Col des Bœufs. It is also possible to reach it from Roche-Plate in 4h30. Marla would mean "many people" in Malagasy.
