Situated on a plateau in the middle of the northern cirque, the îlet d'Aurère (900 m) is the oldest in Mafate. It was discovered around 1780 by Nicolas Lemarchand, who was hunting goats. Having caught a runaway slave living there, he asked him for the name of the place. The slave replied orera, which in "African dialect" meant "good land". Lemarchant obtained the concession, which became Orère and then Aurère. Geraniums and fruit trees were grown here. Today, there's a school here, but as there's no church, the inhabitants of Aurère go to Îlet-à-Malheur to celebrate mass.
