Montbonnet, barony, pilgrimage stage and strategic commercial crossing point is a commune with a rich past. Before the year 1000, the place had a watchtower on its heights before a real stone castle was built there. In 1322, it is said to have welcomed Saint Roch who was on a pilgrimage on the road to Le Puy. But over the centuries, the power and prestige of the local lordships declined, having had to endure in turn the ravages of the Hundred Years' War, waves of mercenaries, etc., before Richelieu, by way of reprisal, had several castles in the Velay dismantled, notably that of Montbonnet in 1632.
