Lihue is the largest city on Kauai with a population of just over 7,000. It is the historical, commercial and political center of Kauai and is home to many restaurants and supermarkets. It is a must, even if only for the airport, for shopping and festive or cultural outings. Several beaches and waterfalls are accessible within a few minutes drive, including the beautiful Hanamaulu Beach, an ideal spot for surfing. History buffs can enjoy a visit to the Kauai Museum or one of the old Wilcox family sugar plantations that transformed the island's landscape.
