Koloa is the oldest sugar town in Hawaii. It was here that a young American named William Hooper founded the first plantation in the archipelago in 1835. It is accessed by Malihua Road, which is called the "tree tunnel" because it is lined with hundred-year-old eucalyptus trees that have joined together to form a green bridge. It is very pleasant to walk through the historic downtown area of Koloa and its stores whose facades have retained their period architecture. This old world charm contrasts with the often overdone atmosphere of Poipu. The Koloa Heritage Trail connects several plaques and statues evoking the past of the place.
