Hanapepe, a former plantation town, was built entirely by Chinese migrants who came to work in the sugar industry. The town was later used as a military training base during World War II, making the town more active than its peaceful neighbors. The old city center is worth a visit, especially on Thursdays during the farmers' market or on Friday nights when the art galleries come alive for the weekly Art Walk from 5 to 9 pm. Finally, for the record, the city has hosted several American film shoots and the sets of Lilo and Stitch are inspired by Hanapepe.
