Forty-five kilometers north of Lihue on Highway 56, Princeville is a luxury resort with a concentration of high-end hotels and golf courses. The resort got its name 'Princeville' after the visit of Prince Albert Kamehameha, son of King Kamehameha IV, who died of illness at the age of 4. The area was once a coffee and sugar cane plantation before becoming a cattle ranching area. Today the place is very popular with vacationers. It offers sumptuous views of the Namolokama mountains and the sea. Its cliffs allow a better view of the horizon where the whales gather during the summer
