The first Tahitians to arrive in Hawaii would have settled in Wailua, which remained the heart of Hawaii's Tahitian community for a long time. In the 20th century, tourism activities developed on the Wailua River - the only navigable river in the Hawaiian archipelago - and beachfront resorts appeared. It was the favorite "playground" of the Hawaiian royal families, the alii. They loved to canoe and swim there. A series of heiaus (temples) were built all along the river in their honor. Only seven are visible, the others being on Mount Waialeale. The river has two major points of interest: Fern Grotto, and Waimea Falls, accessible by a short thirty-minute hike from the kayak mooring point.
