Zumárraga owes its past prosperity to the railway industry. This town of 10,000 inhabitants was once a strategic point on the vascongados and Urola Valley lines. But after the economic crisis of the 1970s, part of its population emigrated. Zumárraga is also the birthplace of the famous conqueror of the Philippines, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, whose statue has dominated the main square of the town since 1897 and whose birth house has been restored. In Zumárraga, you can also visit the hermitage of La Antigua, which forms the route of the Three Temples with the sanctuaries of Loyola and Aranzazu.
