Built between the sea and the mountains, Deba (5,500 inhabitants) is a slightly industrialised town, but its beach is still pleasant and it is a good starting point for excursions to Bizkaia or Guipúzcoa. Deba enjoyed its period of prosperity in the sixteenth century, thanks to its naval transport and its whale and cod fishing expeditions. Deba is also on the northern route to Santiago de Compostela, where there is a pilgrims' hostel. From a geological point of view, Deba is known for its erosion phenomenon, in particular: close to steep cliffs a flat surface stretches out that is uncovered at low tide, much appreciated by migratory birds
