Mutriku is the last coastal village in Gipuzkoa, 5 kilometers west of Deba, before entering the province of Bizkaia. An ancient medieval town, it was a corsair port as well as a whaling port! But Mutriku is best known as the birthplace of Admiral Damián Churruca, a great navigator and cartographer considered by the locals as a hero of Trafalgar, where he died in 1805. His birthplace is located in the beautiful 18th century Palacio Arrietakua. The old town is home to many other palaces and emblazoned mansions, as well as the 19th century neoclassical church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
