Considered one of the prettiest municipalities in Bizkaia, due to its architectural heritage, Oñate (11,000 inhabitants) is a seigniorial town. It was the capital of a county ruled by lords against whom its inhabitants successively revolted until 1845, when it became part of Gipuzkoa. Called the "Basque Toledo" by the great painter Zuloaga, Oñate is full of palaces, churches, Renaissance, Plateresque and Gothic monasteries, etc. From 1548 to 1901, it even had its own university, as illustrious as those of Salamanca or Valladolid. The small town is worth a visit: it is home to the sanctuary of Arantzazu
