Located in the central zone of the Gipuzkoa coast, Orio has long been linked to whaling. The rowing trawlers, which were used by fishermen at the time to hunt cetaceans, have now been converted to rowing, and Orio is now devoted to rowing. The town also has a strong relationship with the Way of St. James, as witnessed by the hermitage of San Martín de Tours or the Baroque church of San Nicolás de Bari. Its historic centre with its steep streets and stairways, Goiko Kale, dates from the Middle Ages. Two beaches here : Antilla, at the mouth of the river Oria, is the most popular; and Orizabar, quieter, ideal for walking.
