Guetaria is one of the prettiest fishing villages on the coast and has a beautiful beach. It is also the birthplace of the great navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who in 1522 brought back from the Philippines the only surviving ship of the first expedition around the world, as well as the famous fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. Whaling was the main activity of the city for several centuries. Its old quarter is well preserved. In the port there are many restaurants with terraces, where you should not forget to taste the txakoli (Basque wine, white or red, preferably fresh), whose vineyards surround the village.
