Irún is not just a simple border town without interest. Over time, the city has worked to enhance its heritage and its role in history. Indeed, Irún was chosen by the Romans to set up their mining activity and their strategic commercial port, Oiasso. The remains of this port were brought to the public's attention with the opening of the Roman Oiasso Museum in 2006. It was also in Irún, on Pheasant Island, that the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed in 1659, sealing the peace between France and Spain with the marriage of Louis XIV to the daughter of Felipe IV of Spain, a union that was later celebrated not far from there, in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
