Lesaka (Lesaca in Castilian) is one of the most important towns in the region with 2,800 inhabitants. When it was founded in the 12th century, its main function was to provide a protective front against the attacks of Gipuzkoa, which invaded the region to plunder it. Lesaka is a town with a strong medieval character, and has some remarkable buildings such as the Zabaleta tower or the Minyurinea tower. In addition, you will be able to observe many houses with wooden and wrought iron balconies. On some of these houses, coats of arms indicate that the son of the house has triumphed on the battlefield; on others, beautiful carved lions support the elaborate balconies; on others, motifs are supposed to protect against the evil eye.Lovers of religious architecture will admire the church of San Martín de Tours, which houses a rococo altarpiece, or the convent of Nuestra Señora de las Dolores, run by Carmelite nuns. If your stay coincides with the city's patron saint's day (the weekend after Easter), you can attend medieval festivities. In the surrounding area, you will find several sites with dolmens and burial mounds in the villages of Pabolleta, Amargun and Agiña. Before arriving at this last site, you should go a little further to see the monument dedicated to Padre Donostia, a magnificent work by the Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza, who was born in Navarra.
