At the bottom of the valley dug by the Bidasoa River is Vera de Bidasoa (Bera in Basque), with 3,800 inhabitants, a town on the border with France and which, as a result, has suffered numerous warlike assaults. One of the most violent episodes took place during the reign of Felipe IV, who valiantly defended the city, but attracted the wrath of the French. Sites of interest include the Church of San Esteban, the funerary stelae of the cemetery and the houses with coats of arms, with the Zelaia house and the Itzea house at the top. Not far away, there is also a funerary stele with a Basque cross in grey marble erected by the great Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza
