Campione is an Italian enclave (23 km from Italy) of 1 km2 in Swiss territory, situated between Lake Lugano and the first slopes of Monte Generoso. The small town of 2,000 inhabitants was once very popular for its casino, once the largest in Europe. In July 2018, the casino went bankrupt, plunging Campione into economic disaster, before reopening in 2022. For two centuries, the town had been part of Switzerland, but since January1, 2020, it has been Italian once again. No customs formalities are required to get here. Visit the beautiful, richly decorated churches.
