Since the early 20th century, Ascona has been a popular destination for artists and intellectuals. Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Ascona underwent a curious cultural experiment: a group of people who advocated a return to nature settled on its hillside, giving it the name of Monte Verità.
