This picturesque little town was created by Cardinal Branda-Castiglioni: after taking part in several councils, he retired here and had it completely rebuilt (1421-1441) on the basis of an earlier Roman settlement. He made it his personal stronghold, spreading his artistic and cultural influence throughout the region. Not to be missed: the harmonious Piazza Garibaldi, home of the Castiglioni family, and the Villa church, with its portal decorated with bas-reliefs (St. Christopher and St. Anthony), both Renaissance; the Gothic collegiate church and baptistery, adorned with frescoes by Masolino da Panicale (1428).
