The town of Liptovský Mikuláš is not very interesting in itself, but it is the best starting point for visiting the beautiful Liptov region, situated between the massifs of the Little Tatras, the Chočské Vrchy and the Western High Tatras, which abound in natural splendour, caves, hiking trails, ski resorts. Two historical events have forged its identity in Slovak folk culture. It was here that Juraj Jánošìk, the Slovak Robin Hood, was executed. Above all, however, it was here on 10 May 1848 that the People's Assembly met and proclaimed the claims of the Slovak nation for the first time.
