Located about kilometres from Miskolc, Aggtelek National Park and its spectacular caves have been classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. It is a limestone region stretching between the valleys of Bódva and Sajó. Some of the caves of these limestone plateaus open in wells, in the form of underground pockets, or in the shape of a gorge with rooms with balconies decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. This underground world of limestone caves goes beyond Hungary's borders and continues in Slovakia. It is the most typical example of the karst formation of temperate mountain areas. From a very complex network extending over a territory of 60 000 hectares, it comprises a total of 712 caves, of which 262 have access from Hungary. The most important cave, the Baradla-Domica, 25 km long, is currently the longest cave to stalagmites in temperate areas.
