Smokovec, the first resort to be built in the Tatras, is the collective name for the Starý, Nový, Horný and Dolný Smokovec high-altitude resorts, built at the end of the 19th century and expanded in the early 20th century. They are located just a few hundred meters apart, separated by thick forests, and are all served by the little red train. Four mineral springs are scattered throughout the municipality, and it was spa tourism that first made Smokovec famous, before it became the closest ski resort to Poprad, which property developers are increasingly exploiting.Starý Smokovec is home to the mountain rescue service.
