Štrbské Pleso, the highest mountain village (1,355 m) in the massif, has only one asset: it's the main ski resort in the High Tatras. Its natural environment could have been idyllic: Štrbské Pleso is built on the edge of a pretty 20-hectare alpine lake, but the landscape is completely denatured today by its concrete towers, examples of megalomaniac modern architecture and countless billboards. The village's original inhabitants have been expropriated and it has lost its soul. Many tourists flock here in summer and winter to ski or hike, with many trails starting from the locality.
