Every year, the small town of Wieliczka, on the outskirts of Krakow, is visited by almost two million tourists. Its rock salt mine, in operation since the 13th century, has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1978. This incredible underground labyrinth of caves, tunnels and chambers is unique in that, over the centuries, it has been filled with sculptures, bas-reliefs and chapels carved out of the salt by the mine workers. Be sure to prepare well for your visit to the mine (and even to the town in summer), which can be a real pain due to the crowds. We advise you to visit early in the day.
