This former capital of Moravia has been one of the country's must-see cities for several years now, as it is so astonishingly beautiful, dynamic and welcoming. Olomouc has a very rich architectural heritage: twenty-eight churches, in particular, dot the city, as well as seven magnificent fountains and universities on every street corner. Its charm lies in its layout: Olomouc has preserved its old layout where narrow streets and convoluted squares intermingle. The city center, concentrated around Horní náměstí Square, is full of treasures. The town hall that dominates the square houses the astronomical clock, the only one in the country besides the one in Prague. The Holy Trinity Column is visible as soon as you enter the square and, thanks to the many statues and bas-reliefs that adorn it, attracts everyone's gaze and curiosity. One can also discover here several of the majestic fountains of the city. This large, almost pedestrian square is usually the first stop on a visit. The lower square, Dolní náměstí, with its many cafes, bars and restaurants, can be discovered in the evening, lively and animated, especially on Uhelná Street, described by locals as Olomouc's street of thirst. Continuing along this square, one arrives at a more residential area formed by Vídeňská Street. The beautiful villas and gardens along the way are worth a small detour. The city's green space, Smenatovy sady park, is still a little further south. Architecture lovers will enjoy a visit to the university district, which is located south of Komenského Street. It seems as if every subject taught (philosophy, pedagogy, etc.) has taken up residence in one of the beautiful colored palaces surrounded by beautiful courtyards. In the heart of this charming baroque district, the huge Arsenal built by Maria Theresa immediately catches the eye and dominates the two main squares of the area. Right across the street, the central building of the university is still populated by many students. Next to it, the Olomouc Archbishop's Palace was once the center of powerful spiritual and temporal power. A city with a particularly rich historical, religious and architectural heritage, but which should not make you forget the obligatory gastronomic stop: take advantage of your stay to taste tvaružky, a cheese stronger than a Corsican cheese, and which goes so well with beer!
