Under the castle that dominates it from a hill, the city is all narrow streets, passages and courtyards. Milan Kundera wrote that "its military past had left an irrevocable mark of hideousness on its face". Fortunately, this is no longer the case. An important fortification in the 17th and 18th centuries (its name is derived from the Czech word for "armor"), the city became an industrial city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century, and the "Austrian Manchester" was adorned with large boulevards. In the center, the old town has kept a certain charm, most of the streets are pedestrian, in a mixture of buildings of various styles and periods.
