As early as antiquity, several communities were established along the Roman consular road linking Argentoratum (Strasbourg) to Tres Tabernae (Saverne). Willgottheim is first mentioned in the 12th century. Willgottheim grew by taking advantage of this traffic route. By the 17th century, it was an administrative, financial and legal center. Its importance was such that the King of Poland's daughter stopped off at a coaching inn on her way to Nancy. In the 19th century, it was proudly known as S'klene Paris, or Little Paris. Today, the commune is working to preserve its architectural, rural and natural heritage (wild orchids).
