An imperial town in the 12th century, Haguenau has lived through history, preserving some remarkable vestiges. In the church of Saint-Georges, the pulpit features a 16th-century bas-relief of the saint slaying the dragon. Many of the center's facades date from the Renaissance. In the 19th century, tobacco, madder and hops made the fortunes of some of the town's inhabitants, traces of which can still be seen today. The Halle aux Houblons is a prime example. At the dawn of the 20th century, the Millionviertel was home to the wealthy residences of wealthy Haguenovians and high-ranking Germans who had settled in the region. These buildings are well worth seeing.
