The almost abandoned medieval village of Rocca Calascio, about 30 kilometers east of L'Aquila, is an obligatory detour for those who are traveling in the area. Located at 1,460 meters above sea level, above Calascio, it offers an absolutely exceptional panorama. In addition to the old stones of the charming historical center, you will see a castle, which was not built here by chance, because, from its rocky peak, it dominates all the surroundings at 360 degrees. It was therefore a military observation point of choice. The picturesque landscapes of Rocca Calascio have been used as a backdrop for many films, including Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Name of the Rose .
