Perched on a plateau between the rivers Tronto and Castellano, built entirely of travertine blocks, elegant Ascoli has admirably managed to preserve its historic centre, whose style dates back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its Piazza del Popolo, a real public square with harmonious buildings, is the jewel of the town. Although Ascoli Piceno is not as well known as other Italian cities, its heritage with its Renaissance palaces is just as rich and worth a visit. The city is known as the "city of a hundred towers" and you will understand why once you have seen the hundreds of buildings in the city!
