San Demetrio nei Vestini is a small town located on the SS-261, about 18 km from L'Aquila, in the Aterno Valley. If its historical center, dotted with palaces once built by the local aristocracy, is of architectural interest, one should rather concentrate on its surroundings which have natural and historical sites to discover. One of the most interesting places to visit is Prata d'Ansidonia, about ten minutes away, for its Castel Camponeschi, a fortress built around the 12th century, which overlooks the ruins of Peltuinum. The caves of Stiffe are also worth a visit, ten minutes from San Demetrio nei Vestini.
