Around Manarola's main avenue run the narrow caruggi . A few decades ago, this alley was crossed by a torrent. To cross from one bank to the other, you had to use one of the eleven stone pontoons. Manarola is also characterized by the presence of tower-houses and fishermen's dwellings, with facades painted in pastel tones that contrast with the anthracite color of the enormous rock that supports them. An association (Fondazione Manarola Cinque Terre for the Landscape Renaissance) is working to preserve and repair the dry-stone walls, and to bring abandoned land back into cultivation.
