The construction of powerful ramparts dates back to the 13thcentury , an essential barrier in the town's attempt to defend itself against attacks from neighboring powers. The main square took several centuries (11th-16th centuries) to achieve its current appearance. It is lined with elegant palaces dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Although Sarzana suffered from bombing during the Second World War, the historic center, which runs alongside the ancient Via Francigena linking northern Europe to Rome, has been preserved. The lively, touristy Via Mazzini is a great place for shopping, and Thursday is market day!
