At the western end of the Gulf, 12 km from La Spezia, Portovenere is one of the pearls of Liguria and a romantic stopover for sea lovers. Until the 15thcentury , it was Genoa's sentinel and an important trading port. The two blocks of buildings built on the sides of the caruggio form a double protective belt. The houses with their polychrome facades (case torri) open onto the Doria pier and the small port. Here, art and nature are in harmony, but the summer crowds are always there. The two small islands of Tino and Tinetto, off the coast of Portovenere, form the La Spezia archipelago with the island of Palmaria.
