At over 1,400 metres above sea level, you may find it hard to appreciate the charms of Penelokan despite the beautiful panorama that stretches out at its feet. Situated on the southern rim of the caldera, this natural balcony overlooks Lake Batur, the Batur volcano and, to the east, the Abang volcano. The village's name means "place to look". When you arrive, you have to pay the entrance fee to the Batur area (32,000 rp per adult) for cameras and parking, and endure the pressure of hawkers, aggressive peddlers and an avalanche of small groups of women carrying baskets full of souvenirs on their heads. Most tourists, arriving by bus and in groups, will have lunch in one of the village's panoramic restaurants, while independent travellers, besieged as soon as they arrive, will simply make a photo stop before continuing on their way.
