The Bali Aga village of Sembiran has a population of 5,000. There are no fewer than 17 temples. Customary laws set it apart from other Balinese villages, particularly those governing marriage and the rules governing Nyepi, the Hindu-Balinese New Year (two Nyepi instead of one). As in Trunyan, on the shores of Lake Batur, the inhabitants did not burn their dead, but wrapped them in sheets and left them on the ground, protected only by a bamboo structure. In 1953, they decided to burn them, but the customary laws became dysfunctional. So they returned to leaving their dead on the ground.
