This 43,420-hectare national park (whose name means "ancient forest") is located in the south-east of East Java, in a region with many secret beaches: the Blambangang peninsula. Difficult access and a lack of infrastructure mean that very few travellers make the effort to get there. Thanks to the civility of the local poachers, the wildlife here seems to be more abundant than at Meru Betiri. Wild roosters, deer, fallow deer, wild boar, leopards, banteng (Java buffalo) and turtles share the territory. After entering the park via Kendalrejo, we head for Rowobendo and Trianggulasi (about 80 km southeast of Banyuwangi), where we can find accommodation. From Rowobendo, a path leads to Nagagalan, a delightfully secluded beach. 3 km from Trianggulasi is Pancur, with its camping ground, from where you can reach the wonderful beaches of Plengkung beyond Grajagan Bay. Here, people sleep in rudimentary bamboo huts (there are currently three surf camps; bookings can be made with park rangers, and all-inclusive three-day packages are available). Plengkung is world-famous for having one of the best tubular lefts to surf. Surfers have given the place a name: G-Land (Grajagan Beach). The season runs from April to September. To walk from the entrance to Trianggulasi to Plengkung: 14 km, about 3 hours. The first stop is Pancur (pronounced "pandchour"), 3 km to the south, where you can camp near a small waterfall.According to local legend, Alas Purwo is where the earth supposedly emerged from the ocean. During the month of Suro, equivalent to the Javanese New Year, many seekers of enlightenment and lovers of mysticism head for this spiritual site. Attracted by the unique atmosphere, these pilgrims meditate in emblematic caves such as Gua Istana (Palace Cave) and Gua Putri (Princess Cave), aspiring to a deep connection with nature.
