A small kingdom, the province of Bangli has never been able to rival its neighbors in terms of tourism. Although it enjoys a healthier climate, it has often become the subject of ridicule due to the presence of the island's only psychiatric hospital. Nevertheless, Bangli is a cool, peaceful little town and a pleasant tourist stop-off, particularly for its Pura Kehen temple, the sanctuary of the royal ancestors, which is one of the most beautiful in eastern Bali. Built in terraces, it features a monumental staircase along which demons and nagas run. Spending the night in Bangli can be very pleasant.
