Travel Guide Tenganan

This small village has been the subject of numerous ethnological studies concerning its origin and the making of the famous double ikat, called Kamben Geringsing, which is supposed to possess magical powers and virtues. It is classified as a Bali-Aga village, or "original Balinese", which escaped the Hindu-Javanese influence of Mojopahit. The villagers, consisting of about three hundred members who form the Desa Adat Tenganan Pegerinsingan, believe that they are direct descendants of the god Indra, and that is why they have kept their customary laws intact, protected from the effects of civilizations they consider harmful.
